This is my hero, my grandfather Virgil Spivey who is 94. He is also an artist and taught me how to fish. He also told me recently, when I asked him the secret to old age was, that if somebody needs your help just go on and help them.

Stephen,
After attending your grandfather's funeral earlier today, I had him on my mind so I googled his name and found this blog. You already know this, but your grandfather was one-of-a-kind. I still use the travel bag he gave me when I departed for college in 1996. I was a high school kid with dreams of traveling the world. I like to think of the gift as your grandfather's way of saying to me "have fun, I wish I could go with you". Also, like many of the other kids that grew up in the FUMC, I have a portrait that Virgil did of me in grade school. My mother-in-law actually has a really cool painting Virgil did of the FUMC sanctuary on her foyer wall (my wife and her sister's fight over who's getting it, lol). Virgil Spivey will always be remembered in my family because of his wonderful personality, consistent presence, and exemplary lifestyle. He truly was a blessing and will be greatly missed. -EBM
